Who could have known that Alexander Guthrie was such a talented man? From his cavalier days as a trader in the British India Company, the Guthrie name now bears the mark of Guthrie Engineering almost 200 years later. S+ took over the reins of its 2012 brochure, a visually driven project for its partners and potential clients.

The National Climate Change Secretariat plans to shed some much needed sunlight on the issue of climate change and how Singapore will be affected by the growing tide that is global climate change. S+ was brought on the team to translate research, statistics, forecasts and figures into accessible publications, which includes a vibrant brochure for public consumption. Telling the story of climate change is not as easy as pointing to the skies, but we are definitely up for the challenge.

We had the distinct honour of working on the PUB Waterworks Commemorative Photo Book – a publication for the simply amazing story of the unsung heroes that have been stationed at the Johor waterworks. For over 50 years, it was the work of a few that ensured there was enough water for millions in the lion city.

A combination of history and nostalgia, the book harkens back to the very first days of the 1961 Water Agreement like a time capsule taking readers on a journey. Full of anecdotes, stories and photographs that charts the history of the facilities and the lives of the people there, it also highlights how PUB has helped to transform the area with its many infrastructural improvements to housing, education and transport over the years.

Two silvers signify golden achievement for SiliconPlus

It’s not often that two completely different efforts achieve the very same end results. Yet that was the case with the two Silicon Plus projects that were awarded Silver Medals in the 2010 Singapore Designer Awards.

With The PSA International Annual Report, we took a more natural design philosophy by finding our inspiration in the varying creatures of the clouds. Birds of all feathers flocked together to represent the admirable characteristics and innate strengths of PSA. Subtly stunning and effectively evocative, this project shows that unorthodox and unconventional thinking can be combined to achieve a winning effect.

On the other hand, the designers of the JURONG International Annual Report put on their wet suits and dove deep down into the concept. Using a clever mixture of design elements, mathematics formulas, witty clichés, and gobs of ingenuity, they turned out a memorable and striking publication.

Statistically, SiliconPlus is quite adept at giving organisations a strong, simple, and clear identity. That’s why, when we heard that people were confused over DOS’s various naming conventions, we researched the identities of other National Statistics Organisations (NSOs), local governments, and government-linked bodies, and found a way to set DOS apart from the crowd.

Our robust approach to JURONG International’s latest Annual Report took on the theme of "Infinite Possibilities” – and saw us appointed as the agency to produce the AR. It was a simple and bold approach, a subtle exclamation mark of their core strengths and brand, wrapped in black and silver. Our years of working with JURONG gave us a deep insight into the inner workings of their corporation, allowing us to pull off and clinch the project this year.

In addition, SiliconPlus also undertook the task of revamping JURONG’s digital presence, tailor-making a new website for their entry into 2010.

The Spirit of Enterprise (SOE) Annual Award Ceremony dinner was an evening of wining, dining, networking and the gathering of camaraderie amongst our entrepreneurs, guests and industry practitioners. Over 300 guests, friends and families of the honourees attended the suit and tie invite-only event at the Intercontinental Singapore to jointly celebrate the award ceremony. It was indeed a momentous evening for the team at SiliconPlus as we celebrated the spirit of entrepreneurship being awarded to our Creative Director, Sa'at Ismail.

The SOE Award is an annual award that recognises the entrepreneurial spirit in Singapore by honouring local self-reliant entrepreneurs operating small and medium businesses. From over 117 nominees, only 30 has been selected and honoured in 2009. The 30 Honourees represent the cream of the crop of entrepreneurs who have shown resilience and tenacity in building up their respective business. Guest-of-Honour, Mr S Iswaran, Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education, formally recognised the winning entrepreneurs at the SOE Annual Award Ceremony dinner held on 17th November 2009.

We managed to clinch a finalist place in the Spark Awards!

Our first entry capitalised on the sense of sight and touch, which truly describe the many varying fabrics that Maxim Textiles has to offer. Literally, we plucked at the fabric of imagination and pursued the project from another angle.

Our second entry, Tasty Singapore, Timeless Recipes posits that the truly cuisine and gourmet dining experience is only limited by our imagination. And it is imagination that is the centrepiece of this creation; it shows through every conception captured in delicate and gastronomic photography. Function took a back seat to artistic intent, with even the most unusual of instruments used to titivate - crafting images of food and ingredients that do justice to the line - 'we eat with our eyes first'.

As a three book package, we designed a single file where all three publications can be carried as one. This reflects the nature of the Renaissance City plan itself, of three different sectors working together for a single vision.

Maritime Sector Woos Students With Magazine

The maritime industry in Singapore is jazzing up its traditionally stodgy image in a bid to attract more young people into its fold. It has produced a glossy magazine featuring 21 of the industry's promising young professionals. Titled 'maritime', the magazine showcases professionals ranging from shipbrokers to naval architecture engineers from various companies in Singapore. Production of the magazine - the first of its kind for the industry - was overseen by the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) and supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). MPA said future editions are being planned. The magazine was produced by local design firm SiliconPlus Communications. - The Strait Times, by Nicholas Fang

The Spotlight Is On Maritime One!

Maritime One was a project that we embarked on for the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA). Aimed at attracting new graduates and young high fliers to join the maritime industry, it was a snazzy, glossy new publication that was organic as it was exciting. It allowed readers to look beyond the surface of the maritime industry and delve into its exciting depths.

The magazine itself gained some publicity, being featured in the Straits Times as well as being able to spin off successful programmes and events, just like the NetworkONE reception at the hip entertainment location, The Arena.

This was a creative task that was a lot of fun to do. We had to raise the brand of Tasty Singapore in creative culinary ways. Art direction included turning local favourites into visual feasts fit for any five star restaurant. From chicken rice to chendol - you would not be able to recognise any of it!
